Music videos that have influenced my music video

Leona Lewis- Run

This music viedo relates to the video my group wants to create as its filmed in a similar location in which inspired us and gave us the idea for our location. Also We we inspired by the type of clothiung she wore in the video, in our video our artist will also be wearing a dress. In addition we admired her make and how it created a toine of mood, in which we are hoping to do.

Nelly Furtado- I'm Like A Bird-

This particular video relates to what my group wants to do for the same reasons, however the song identifies the artist as being a free spirit, this is how our artist is going to be portayed in our video. Also I like the natural lighting used in this video. I also like the use of editing in this video, in which make the artist dominant and controlling thrpught out the video.

Taylor Swift ft The Civil Wars- Safe & Sound-

This music video relates to the aspect of the idea of our music video as it portrays a girl on her own in a deserted forrest singing a love song. I gives the idea of loniness, in which links to the lyrics of our song choice. Also in the bridges in the song where the artist is not singing the vidseo shows a lts of wide shots and close up in which s wt we inspire to use in our video.

Blogging Task: Reflection on Progress

Planning For Music Video: Examining Artist Website

Blogging Task: Pitch

Planning - Website for original artist

I will be looking at the website for the original artist and discuss how they use it to promote their brand image and song.

The above screenshot shows the vibrant colours that they use to promote their image and genre. The electro green and purple colours on either side of Katy b draws the attention to her listeners and viewers, it also shows the type of genre that katy b is. The dubstep genre uses bright colours and luminous lights which has an effect on the viewers.

They promote the artist song and image by giving the general public many social networking sites where they can get information about the artist directly, this would create an immediate bond with the artist and her fans, the website also shows the figure of how many people are interested in Katy b, this shows how popular she is.

The above screenshot shows the dates and where Katy b is performing, this promotes their image as it attracts people to go and buy tickets to see her, also the title 'Headlines' shows that she will be an important person at the concerts.

The webistes promotes the artist songs by having a list of music videos which the can view on her own website which would be more easier for her fans and the public than youtube where they have to find the songs which would waste time, on her webiste the songs are directly there. The screenshot above illustrates this.

Planning - Analyse 3 music videos

Animation Software - Powered by GoAnimate.

Plannig - Analysing 3 music videos

I will be doing a 'GoAnimate' presentation explaining my reasons to why I have chosen these three music videos and how the have influenced my final planning deicision .

Planning - Analysis of the original video

Above is the original video for my song choice. The orginal video is completley different my video for many reasons. The first reason is the location where the filming will take place, the original video was filmed in a hotel and in a bedroom, my video will be filmed in a tunnel and in a forest. The lighting of the original is more low key lighting that high key lighting. my music video will be amixture of low and high key lighting. Some scene where it will be filmed in the forest will be during the daytime so it will be bright and some scenes will be filmed in a tunnel which will be during the night or late evening which will make the lighting darker, so overall the lighting will be a mixture of both high key and low key in comparison to the original video which is set in low key lighting throughout the majority of the music video.

The mise-en-scene will differ from the original video; the scenery in the original video is shown to be very depressing with the decor being a domestic environment then it moves onto the artist in a nightclub whereas the music video which I will be filming is going to be filmed in a more rural area and it will also be filmed outside which differs to the original video which is filmed in indoors .

Blogging Task: Draft Storyboard

Blogging Task: Potential Location - Highgate Wood

As Highgate Woods is a rather large area to cover we won't be wanting to wonder around finding areas to film all day so with a map and a quick visit before we start shooting we'll be able to find our exact location efficeintly..... and hopefully not get lost. The map is very useful, it provides areas where there is woodland, shrubs and growing wild flowers as well as areas that we most likely wouldn't want to visit like football grounds and the cafe. We probably would want to film where there is a toilet nearby as we wouldn't want our artists and film crew to be uncomfortable throughtout the day.

Highgate Wood opens at 7.30am every day of the year. It closes at sunset, depending what time of year it is it can be as early as 4.30pm in winter and as late as 9.45pm in summer. This we musttake into account as we plan to film at dusk and at night if possible.

Blogging Task: Potential Location - Finsbury Park, Parkland Walk

Today the group went out and took some shots of where we would like to film our music video. On a clear day, lighting is good, the atmosphere is peaceful but at the same time the trees and narrow pathways transform the scene into a dark and dense place creating this deep mood that we wish to create during dusk or at night. An ideal place to film our artist walking and running down the pathway as she performs the song.

Question 7

1. Pop videos are built around songs. Often songs do not pose traditional narrative structures.

2. Pop videos use the artist as both narrator and character

3. The singer looks straight into the camera, a form of direct address to involve the viewer at home in their performance.

Our video follows the disjuncture route. This means our video has very little connection between video and lyrics. The video will also follow all three structures above, it will be built around the song, it will utilise the singer as both narrator and character and the singer will look directly into the camera as a form of direct address to the viewer.

Planning: Animatic

Question 6

The genre of the music video: 'Broken Record' by Katy b is 2-step. 2-step is a form of UK garage which began its rise to prominence on pirate radio stations around London. Fans of this genre appreciate the lack of a traditional beat; a typical 2-step drum pattern features a kick on the first and third beat. Furthermore, the fans of this genre like to see regular street, club or home locations that they can relate too. A lot of the fans like to see almost a theatrical piece in the music videos, like the track 'Broken Record' there is a small plot to the video which doesn't necessarily coincide with the lyrics but the fans appreciate this level of creativity. Generally, the fans expect to see quite regular 'everyday clothing' in the music videos to further portray an image of a regular, relatable life.

Online discussion of 2-Step music releases:

Introduction of our song, outlining how it is different to the original video

The song my group has chosen is Broken Record by Katy B.
Our video will be different from the original because it will be set in a completely different location, which is out doors in a forest also on a old train track and in a tunnel. Where as, the original video is set in a hotel or an apartment and a club. Also it looks like the song was filmed in the evening and night, we are going to film during the day and in the evening. There are mostly mid shot and close up in the video; we are planning to use a variety of different shot such as long shot, wide shots and low angel and high angel shots. Katy b is lying down on a bed singing throughout the video; our artist will be standing up and walking around throughout the video.

Planning: Analysis of 3 Influential Videos

Target Audience

Our target audience are young teenagers, and young adults, perhaps students. They may live at home with their parents or universirty or at a small flat as they are students or may be just starting out in their carrer, therefore they may not have a lot of money. Their age may varyy from ages 15-25. They may be both male and female as the lyrics appeal to those in love with someone however they are trying to fight the temptation and break free from their relationship. Their ethnicity varies, so it would be mult-iculture as the lyrics applies to everyone.

As I said before they may be students, therefore they may not necessarily have that much money so they may buy their groceries from Asda or Tesco's and they may event thei shops own brand food. In their spare time they may go out partying or hanging out with their friends. Some of them may read the Metro newspaper as it is it free on London transport. Others may buy fasion magazines such as
Vogue as they may be into the latest fashion and wants to keep up to date with the latest trends, just like our artist. Therefore they may shop at the high street shops, the most fashionable shops such as New Look, Top Shop, River Island or perhaps some where cheaper such as Primark. Our male audience members may shop in Top Man, Jd Sports, Blueink; or both may just shop online because it may be easier for them.

They more likely to use buses or tubes to go to school, college, university or to work in the city, because they may not be old enough to drive or they may not be able to afford to buy a vechile; also it may be easier and less expensive for them to travel. Their favourite gadgets may be their phone (iPhone/Blackberry) to socialise as well as getting E mails for work ;purposes. A key essential gadget they may use regularly is their computers/laptop/Ipads, to work from at home. Our female audience may be into make up and accessoriess where as the male audience may be into video games.

As they are students they may prefer fizzy drinks and high energy drinks, however the older generation may prefer the odd glass of wine/rozay. The students who like to party may prefer stronger alchol (the spirits) such as vodka or they may want a can of beer.  If they where given a choice of picking their favourite holiday they would probably choose somewhere where they can let loose and release the stress of education. So they may they may choose somewhere like Ibiza or Magaluf so they can fun, drink and party. However the older generation may go somwhere like the
Canary Islands where they can relax and enjoy the weather. They may like the genre of our song because its a upbeat song, kind of like a old school garage beat, as they like to party this type of genre fits their personality.

Planning for Music Video: Original Video

Analysis:

Firstly, our music video will have a completely different setting.

The original video is set in 2 main places. A hotel room;

And a club;

Whereas our video will be set in a woods/forest as this is the vision we had for our music video. Also, there will be the artist and the artist only in our video, whereas the original video showcases many other personalities. Also, our video will feature a completely different costume, In the picture above we see the artist Katy B dressed in a black dress, we envisioned for our artist to where a white or cream colour dress to stand out in the chosen setting. The props we will be using will also be completely different, so far we have angel lights. So overall, our video will differ greatly from the original video.

Research : Reflection on progress

Blogging Task: Skills audit

The research conducted in my AS year was not very thorough. So in this aspect of research, i've developed far better skills than I had last year. I am now able too look at things in a much more analytical light, being able to clearly distinct between what will work and what won't. Research in as was conducted really only for props and locational purposes. This year already I have looked at other videos within the same genre to properly gauge a fitting location, style and artist. For example, having a Hip-Hop music video set in the forest wouldn't make much sense at all, whereas a club setting would fit perfectly.

Now in my A2 year, everything is well planned, we have about 3 different locations down as possible options. We have visited these location make sure they fit our image for what we want are video to look like. as compared to last year, our original location need to be booked prior to filming there, because of this reason we were not able to film there. The change of location took us time to figure out, creating less time to film.

Also, we have sorted out what we want for our props. last year, our props were thought of on the spot while filming, "Oh we could use this" " Should we add this?" were thoughts that entered our minds during the filming process, which distracted us. This time we thought of props, noted them down and thought about how we could get hold of them.

This year we made an anamatic and a storyboard early on in the process, just a couple of weeks after our initial thoughts. We made the anamatic and story board by thinking up shots that we think could work well. Last year we made a random storyboard that we didn't even end up following. This is because when we went to try and film these shots, they just didn't make any sense or didn't look good.

So far my skills have developed far beyond last year even though I still have a lot to learn. I believe these new skills I have acquired will allow me to make a much higher quality of video.

Planning: Chosen Song

KATY B - Broken Record

Initially when we heard this song our group knew when and where we wanted to film this video. As we listened to the song over and over again we could visualise the video in our minds. We wanted a genre of music that was different from what majority of people in London listened to to (indie & pop). So choosing the genre of dubstep/electronic music was perfect. It is typically an english style of music, another reason why we chose it because we felt it represented a lot of young english teens. The original video also gave us a slight idea of how we wanted our video to look.

Planning: Potential Songs

Tanya Lacey - Greatness ft Kano

Chase ande Status - Blind Faith ft Liam Bailey

Rudimental - Feel the Love

The Kooks - Naive

Angel - Ride Out

Katy b - Broken Record

Research : Skills Audit

Throughout the AS  practical project that was conducted, I feel that my skills for the research have improved massively. The first way is that in A2 I have done more research overall regarding the music video which will be made whereas in AS I didn't do that much research in the planning for the thrillers which made the whole AS less organised.

In A2 I feel that I have been more organised regarding my practical work, by me doing more blogs and researching into the genre of my music video in detail which has made me  realise how important researching is .

Blogging Task: State of the music industry in 2012

The music industry has changed drastically in the last decade. Illegal downloading means now that record labels and artists now no longer make the money they used too off their music. Sites like the recently shutdown 'Piratebay' and 'Limewrie' is where a majority of the music is illegally downloaded from. This means that what used to be a fair exchange; an artist giving music in return for money, is now lop-sided, customers can obtain music without exchanging money which in reality is stealing.

Furthermore, the way music is produced has now changed, making it more difficult for record labels to make money. Artists now have recording equipment at home and editing software on their PC's. Making one wonder if record labels are needed that much anymore. Another major change to the record labels situation is the big 4 (EMI, Sony, Warner, Universal) record labels becoming the big 3. EMI records has been bought by Universal records.

Also promotion has changed greatly, artists can now use social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook to promote music as artists like 'Lethal B' have shown. Further asking the question as to whether record labels are actually needed anymore. Video streaming sites like Youtube are very powerful in promoting music, as its exposed to what could be millions of views in such a short period of time.
So now in 2012, 'Rihana' an extremely popular artist is now the most illegally downloaded artist in the world. 'Rihana's' latest album named 'Talk Talk Talk' was downloaded illegally 1,228,313 times between January and July 2012, truly staggering figures.

My Chosen Artist

 Katy B

 Broken Record

Broken Record is song by Katy B and is the third single from her debut album, On a Mission. It was released in the United Kingdom on 25 March 2011 as a digital download. It charted at number 8 on the UK Singles Chart on 3 April 2011.

Our group chose this song in particular as it is a fast and up beat song however the original video contrast to the pace of the song as it is slower. Rather than people dancing around like you would expect in this particular type of genre of song, Katy B is lying down on the bed and singingthe song in which shows more meaningnto the lyrics and the emotions of the song.

Its Genre is  2-step, breakbeat

Lyrics-

I would toss some time at night with your voice in my head
Like a broken record all the words you say
And when I finally fall asleep you find your way into my dreams
But I would never mind, you see, 'cause I get to live my fantasy

And I know though we're made our mistakes
But you're holding every breath I take
Feeling this is more than fate
So please don't let me go, my baby

And I know though we're made our mistakes
But you're holding every breath I take
Feeling this is more than fate
So please don't let me go, my baby

I try my best to get away from you so badly
Knowing that I'd give my heart to you so gladly
But then it came, reality, every word of when she came to me
But now I gave myself to you, I'm so scared of what you're gonna do

And I know though we're made our mistakes
But you're holding every breath I take
Feeling this is more than fate
So please don't let me go, my baby

And I know though we're made our mistakes
But you're holding every breath I take
Feeling this is more than fate
So please don't let me go, my baby

Keep your arms exactly where they are
I wanna be here, I wanna feel you
And I keep my thoughts exactly where you are
I wanna be here, I wanna feel you

Like a broken record
Like a broken record
Like a broken record
Like a broken record
